Having decided on my topic, I then needed to decide which style of documentary would fit my topic best. I pretty quickly ruled out a few as I could see that they wouldn't work with my chosen subject matter. For example, participatory or performative styles were unnecessary as there isn't really much for a presenter to be involved with.
Observational is another style that I quickly dismissed as I want my documentary to be informative rather than interview style opinion presentation. I also don't think the crocus flower tends to have much of an opinion on things.
I came to the decision that an expository documentary style will be best fitting for my subject matter. I will rely on a 'voice of God' voice over to present the information accompanied by cinematography, photography, illustrations, and hopefully archive footage to create a visual narrative.
I decided to do some research into this style of documentary to gather some ideas and inspiration for my own work. I tried to find documentaries with similar subject matters to mine.
I watched Nicholas Cranes 'Town' docu-series in which he actually visits Saffron Walden, this gave me a lot of inspiration.
